terry clement: Din Times 8

Underbelly - iron belly @ 8:05pm
A cult figure in his native Canada, 2013 newcomer Terry Clement tackles comedy from a psychedelic distance, combining elements of surrealism, dada, and old school humour methods. His uncompromising style pushes the boundaries of reality, taste and humour in this highly original hour of progressive comedy, which is as much a theatrical presentation as it is a stand-up show.
It is difficult to describe on a press release exactly what Terry does. Alternative? Yes. A mixture of psychedelic performance art and Blue Collar observations strained through a Picasso filter and rolled onto a Gysin Canvas? Perhaps. Din Times 8 is at times scary, silly and almost always hallucinatory, transcending traditional thinking and pricking the audience's sense of reality.

Hailed by critics and comics alike as one of the UK’s greatest and most original joke writers, Benny Boot’s unique style and unconventional comedic delivery proved irresistible to Fringe-goers and he sold out every single seat during his month run at last year’s Fringe.
This year, Benny pre-empts his imminent fame by recording a live one-hour TV special from the 2013 Edinburgh Festival. He has a producer, he has a venue, and he now has access to the latest hi-tech equipment available in the TV industry. The cameras will be at the ready and the networks will be fighting over the rights to own the next Michael McIntyre as Benny delivers another highly original hour of cleverly-crafted jokes and continues to blur the line between reality and hyper-reality.
Benny stormed the Altitude Comedy Festival in 2012 and 2013 and was instantly branded the next ‘comic’s comic’. His peers became his fans and the likes of Tim Minchin, Jimmy Carr, Andrew Maxwell, Marcus Brigstock and Terry Alderton are all now firmly part of Benny’s ever-growing fan club.

An unexplained absence was felt at last year’s Fringe; an unsettling vibe that haunted our industry. Where was the Fringe veteran Carey Marx? He’d been a Festival stalwart since 2003, captivating the audiences with his comic brutality and mischievous, gleeful delivery…
Alas, Carey was unable to perform last year due to a minor affliction they call a ‘heart attack’. But he survived, and the aftereffect is that it has given Carey further material to twist into this darkly shocking new hour of playful humour. After all, this is a laughing matter, and the perfect idea for an Edinburgh show.
Intensive Carey delves into the repercussions of a life-changing experience. What happens when something so profound impacts your life? On hearing his doctor’s orders (“Mr Marx, if you have another heart attack, go immediately to a hospital. Do not, I repeat, do not, consider masturbating”), Carey was forced to review some bad decisions in life. This show is about hospitals, a blanket, monsters, and an empty drawer. It's about people, animals and things. It's about an hour. Witness the survival of the un-fittest.

Caroline rhea: caroline rhea

gilded balloon - dining room @ 8:15pm
Though she may be best known by many as Aunt Hilda on Sabrina, Caroline Rhea is one of the most accomplished comedians and comedy actresses of her generation. Her last run at the Fringe in 2010 won her great reviews, as well as a growing British fan-base, and she returns this year with another fresh and spontaneous hour of stand-up.
Having ventured from Canada to New York to study stand-up, Caroline soon featured on MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour, Comic Strip Live (Fox) and Caroline's Comedy Hour (A&E). LA soon beckoned and NBC offered her the leading role in their sit-com Pride and Joy. But her fame came with Sabrina and the Teenage Witch (ABC & WB) and countless offers soon flooded in, amongst them replacing Rosie O’Donnell and hosting her own talk show, The Caroline Rhea Show (CBS), regularly starring in Hollywood Squares (CBS), and becoming the original host of The Biggest Loser (NBC).
Hollywood soon took notice and her movie credits include The Perfect Man (opposite Heather Locklear), Man on the Moon (with Jim Carey) and Christmas With The Kranks (alongside Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis). She has also appeared in comedy classic Curb Your Enthusiasm and provides several voices on the Disney Channel.

david quirk: shaking hands with danger

pleasance courtyard - the cellar @ 9:45pm
Australian award-winning comedian David Quirk returns to this year’s Fringe after a two year break with a tale that takes us back to one day of his life in Finland; a day that changed everything, when he shook hands with danger and didn’t let go.
Part tribute, part confessional, this is a love story in reverse where people get hurt and cheaters change their spots. Everybody’s done it, or thought about doing it, or knows someone who has. So let’s talk about it.
A triumph at the Australian festivals this year, Shaking Hands With Danger won David the Piece of Wood Award (the comedian’s choice award) as well as excellent reviews. It is a good show by a bad person about Nissan Navarras and lovers, iPhones and babies, dental dams and push rings, and a flight with Slash. It has been in the making for nearly two years, and you’ll learn why, once you’ve seen it.

In 2012, Felicity Ward stole the hearts and the stars of the critics with her deeply personal but hilarious show The Hedgehog Dilemma. The critical acclaim arrived en mass and the outstanding reviews rolled in from start to finish.
But amongst the accolades, the self-congratulations and the tearstained Angus beef burgers, she realised that when it comes down to it, this is still a ridiculous job. Who else gets a round of applause before they even walk into their office? Who makes people pay for them before they’ve started work? Comedians! That’s who. In this straight-up stand-up show, she takes you through big intros, autotune, her love for junkies, the butchering of language, anxiety attacks, holding a duck and big finishes. She's putting her cards on the table and her dick on her sleeve. Is that how the saying goes?

howard read: hide and speak

gilded balloon - dining room @ 9:30pm
Multi award-winning comedian and animator Howard Read is one of the most original artists to perform at the Fringe and the first to ever use animation in live comedy. Hide and Speak is a totally unique comedy experience where Howard’s own latest technology makes it possible for several cartoon characters to literally come to life and improvise with a live audience. There’s even a free whistle if you can work out how he does it…
Howard is best known as the other half of the animated six-year-old virtual stand-up comic Little Howard, who will also be appearing at the Fringe this year, and together they have appeared on some of the biggest TV shows on three continents, performed in front of (and insulted) The Queen, been nominated for The Perrier Award as well as winning and being nominated for numerous other awards, and had three series of the award-winning and critically acclaimed Little Howard’s Big Question on BBC1, BBC2 and CBBC. Their unique live shows, adaptable to both adult and family audiences, have toured the land and the comedy festivals of the world. They also create unique bespoke events for charity events and corporate clients.

keith farnan: fear itself

underbelly - belly dancer @ 6:20pm
One of the Fringe’s most insightful comics, Keith Farnan, returns to the festival after a year off, this time exploring Fear Itself, a rather appropriate theme for many people involved in Edinburgh…
The world is fuelled by fear. Global fears; plague, war, asteroids, a robot uprising. Everyday fears; dying, meaninglessness, random violence, spiders. In all this, the key ingredient is uncertainty. Dithering leaders do not instil confidence. The indecision of a doctor does not inspire hope. Wavering lovers fail to arouse joy. But despite our days being filled with worries we continue to function and, without this uncertainty and fear, there is no love, there are no triumphs. There is nothing worthy without fear. Dammit.
Franklin D. Roosevelt once said we have nothing to fear but fear itself, and then America dropped two nuclear bombs on a civilian population creating quite an addendum to the list of things to be frightened of. Nowadays, the world doesn’t need North Korea to throw a tantrum to be afraid. People can be terrified all on their own, especially if they have a fear of loneliness. However, there are some who are willing to do whatever it takes to overcome fear and embrace uncertainty. Then, there are others who attempt to make a living out of both. Keith Farnan is the latter.

lee camp: destruction! distraction! evolution?

just the tonic, bristo square @ 6:50pm
Evil forces and billionaire agendas have won the day while filling our heads with iPhone ecstasy and PlayStation porn. Can Lee Camp act as our time bomb of reason, jarring us awake, satirizing us into consciousness? Destruction! Camp explores the corporate/banker hold on the world and the dark idea of profit over people. Distraction! We’re able to ignore the devastation by focusing our attention on the non-events of life – endless shopping and meaningless media charades. Evolution? We are in the midst of a global awakening, but can we embrace it? This is a brand new hour of cultural commentary at its toughest, funniest, and perhaps most critical.
With a psychoanalyst military father, perhaps it’s surprising that Lee is fast becoming one of the States’ most prolific political activist commentator comedians and has already been banned from various media outlets (Fox News for one) for his truthful observations.

mark thomas: 100 acts of minor dissent

the stand III @ 7:30pm
Over the years, Mark Thomas has poked his nose into enough things to cause a politician to resign, arms deals to collapse, reform inheritance tax law, force the odd multinational to clean up its act a little and accidentally become Guinness World Record holder for political protests.
This August, Mark is back to doing what he does best; mischief, defiance and joyously bad behaviour occasionally gift wrapped with the ribbons of political gesture. Setting himself the task of committing 100 Acts of Minor Dissent in the space of a year, Mark will be cataloguing everything from the smallest and silliest action to the grandest confrontations. The results will no doubt be subversive, hilarious, mainly legal and occasionally inspiring.

pete cain: everbody out!

the stand at the assembly rooms @ 10:15pm
The UK has an immigration problem; the infrastructure clearly cannot cope with the amount of people that are here, and to make the situation worse the government admit they don’t actually know how many people are in the country because they stopped counting them in & out years ago. But fear not! Pete Cain has a brilliant solution to this and all our other social, economic & political problems.
This August, Pete Cain, one of our most thought-provoking comics, is advocating kicking Everybody Out of the country so they can be counted back in. However, not everyone will be allowed back in. His new immigration policy stipulates that only “nice people” will be re-admitted. Colour, creed, race and religion are irrelevant; you’ve just got to be nice. Bankers, politicians and other criminals needn’t bother applying. Pete is aiming to make Britain “Great” by building a utopian society for the people and not the ruling classes.
This brand new show is an intelligent, light-hearted look at the UK’s immigration policy through the eyes of a wickedly funny, incorrectly political, radically reasonable, cynically seasoned stand-up.

terry alderton: season 4

pleasance courtyard - cabaret bar @ 8pm
Arguably one of the most intriguingly twisted comedians of our generation and total Fringe sell-out 2009/10/11/12, Terry Alderton returns to this year’s Fringe with yet another hyper-hour of warped wit and contorted comedy. A performer of inhibited extremes and sheer unconventionality, be prepared for a brand new show of a spellbinding amalgamation of noises, voices, incredible physicality and a mind-blowing insight into the inner workings of a fantastic comedy mind as you’ve never seen it before.
Having enjoyed a succession of acclaimed national tours, live shows and television appearances, Terry is quite simply the most exciting live act working in comedy today. It is largely unknown that Terry’s bipolar disorder originated his ever-present conflicting ego / conscience on stage, a hugely original and ground-breaking technique that often leads him into unpredictable routines so that no two shows are ever the same.

pleasance courtyard - the green @ 7:30pm
Fringe Legend multi award-winning, Perrier-nominated comedian, author, explorer and extreme unusualist, Tim FitzHigham, is back in a brand new show. This year he will be bespoke speaking about his most mystifying challenge to date.
The Spirit of the Fringe award winner’s previous missions and brilliantly bad ideas have seen him paddle the Thames in a paper boat, row the Channel in a bathtub, live a year as a medieval knight errant, vigorously explore the Kama Sutra, Morris Dance from London to Norwich, take inflatables down Olympic black skiing runs, paddle logs up the Amazon and generally re-create the world's weirdest wagers. His unswerving devotion to his bad ideas and the shows they create has seen him fracture a couple of fingers and a toe (twice), break a rib, re-mortgage his house, contract a flesh eating microbe, collapse of dehydration, be blinded in one eye for six months, spend several nights with the Leith Police, survive minor concussion and be hospitalised with a bone-marrow eating infection among a further catalogue of injuries and stunning disasters. No one chases the punch-line to a story this hard.

Little Howard is the world’s only live interactive animation. He’s won so many awards and fantastic reviews and he’s only just celebrated his 6th birthday (for the tenth year in a row)! He’s also a published author and has done lots of television stuff, like The Royal Variety Performance, The Slammer (CBBC) and Little Howard’s Big Question (BBC1) – yes, he’s even had his own television show!
Yet Little Howard is true to his roots and live theatre is still his first love. But life is tough in showbiz; Little Howard’s big new act keeps going wrong, Roger The Pigeon has spent all their money on cookie cutters, his comedy counterpart Big Howard has been diagnosed with being clinically unfunny and there’s a slug in the backstage toilet. And it’s about to get worse: a sinister figure arrives and Big Howard and Little Howard have to put on the best show of their lives to keep themselves out of jail! And so, this August, they will be returning to the Fringe with one of the most unique family comedy shows ever.
