abandoman: hot desk (udderbelly, 9:10pm)

Now officially one of the Fringe’s favourite and most popular acts, Abandoman return with more free-styled musical comedy genius and an even bigger show than ever before. Involving a broader scope of musical influences, a live interactive cinema screen and topped off with live dancers, the E4 Udderbelly this August will never be the same again!
Following the out-of-this-world highs of last year's Moonrock Boombox, Abandoman have hit the ground with a thud. They're back in the office...and trying desperately to escape. Using their trademark blend of audience interaction and razor-sharp improvisation, watch as they weave stories and hit songs from the characters in the crowd. Who will be chosen to fill the role of the office temp? Who will join them onstage as an assistant? And who is going to take the minutes? With the show relying entirely on audience suggestion, absolutely nothing is planned and anything can happen. Find yourself captivated as Abandoman take you on a magical journey, all with one mission: to escape the humdrum of the 9-to-5.
Currently unparalleled by any other show at the Fringe, Ireland’s top comedy hip hop improv team swiftly adlibbed their way from the smaller capacity Fringe spaces to what has become one of the major festival venues in three years. The Australia comedy festivals were soon to follow suit and, in February 2012, their debut performance there won them a Best Comedy nomination, for which they were nominated again this year, and a Best Newcomer award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Every summer you will be able to see them storming the UK festivals from Bestival to Latitude, Rockness, Glastonbury, Hop Farm and V Festival.

des clarke: the trouble with being des (the assembly rooms, 7:30pm)

One of Scotland’s favourite comedians is at a crossroads in life and there are some things he needs to get off his chest. Des Clarke returns to the Fringe after a year off, and this time it’s personal.
The presenter of Capital FM’s Breakfast Show and Daily Record columnist has come a long way since he was voted runner up in Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny competition. In a career that has spanned 14 years, Des’s first mainstream break came when he took over from Ant & Dec on the ever-popular children’s show SMTV Live. He has since become a television household name, especially in his native Scotland, starring in numerous TV shows including hosting BBC Scotland's coverage of Children In Need. He has gone on to appear on the likes of Comedy Fest Live (BBC3), Live Floor Show (BBC1), Club Cupid (STV), Whatever (Sky 1), Offside (BBC1) and Sportsround (BBC2).
Des is as big a radio star as he is in TV and, ten years after winning Presenter of the Year at the British Radio Awards in 2004, Des has just been awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award at the Scottish Variety Awards. He later moved to XFM, which soon became Galaxy Scotland and then Capital FM, and has been hosting the Breakfast Show since 2008. He’s even a dab-hand at theatre these days, starring as the lead comic roles in Cinderella and Aladdin at the Kings Theatre in Glasgow.
Comedy however is still his first love after he won his school talent show in the 1990’s. He is a regular performer at the highly regarded comedy clubs The Stand and the Comedy Store and has toured worldwide from New York to Adelaide to Dubai. The Trouble With Being Des will be his 7th Fringe show.

felicity ward: the iceberg (dairy room - underbelly pasture, 9:25pm)

Having had such an incredible Fringe in 2012 with her critically acclaimed, award-winning deeply personal show, The Hedgehog Dilemma, it was near-on impossible to believe that Felicity Ward would surpass herself in 2013. But indeed she did, and now she has become one of the Fringe’s most favourite of performers.
The Iceberg has nothing to do with Leonardo DiCaprio. Or lettuce. Instead, it’s about perspective – what we see, what we think now and what is actually going on. For all the moments where you think you understand the enormity of a situation, then the water drains and you step back and realise what you’re really dealing with. You know what’s underneath the tip of the iceberg? The rest of the iceberg. Whether you choose to look or not is up to you…
First seen on the Australian comedy scene in 2005 in Ten Network’s popular sketch show The Ronnie Johns Half Hour, Felicity has since gone on to become one of Down-Under’s favourite funny people, appearing in ABC’s prominent music comedy quiz show Spicks and Specks, Thank God You’re Here (Channel 7), Good News Week (Channel Ten) and has her own stand-up comedy special as part of ABC2’s Warehouse Comedy. In 2008, she won Best Newcomer for the Melbourne Airport Award and has since been reeling in awards and nominations. 2012 was her year, with The Hedgehog Dilemma receiving a nomination, if not the award, at every major Australian festival.
She has toured internationally from London to LA to Hong Kong to Singapore, and in 2012 co-starred in Working Dog Productions’ (the makers of The Castle and The Dish) Australian comedy feature film Any Questions For Ben? In her brief time in the UK she appeared on Russell Howard's Good News (BBC) and from the Edinburgh Fringe was invited to perform The Hedgehog Dilemma in LA at the Hollywood Improv.

josie long: cara josephine (the stand, 8:40pm)

Three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and cult optimist is back with a brand new show about love and being as outdoorsy as a bear. After a well-deserved year off last year, Josie Long returns to the Fringe with her seventh hour of inimitable stand up.
Josie has come to realise that, in all the areas she’s covered in the last few years, she’s never really talked about her family or finding love. With a new niece in the picture, Josie reflects on her own childhood and the resilience of an older sister. She had never really truly known heartbreak until now, and she is using this experience to change her ways; to be more patient, to work out what she really wants and to become a better person. This is by far her most personal show to date. Oh, there are also some mentions about the Quakers and Walt Whitman too.
In her last Fringe appearance in 2012, Josie received her third Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination and collected more stars than a small solar system. Throwing aside the whimsical reputation that she had become known for, a new, more politically aware and socially conscious comedian had emerged and captivated the comedy industry in a totally different way. Josie is renowned for writing about what she cares about and, although there has more recently been a political underlying to her material, she always has the ability to make her shows friendly and silly. As many reviewers point out, you cannot help but come away from her shows hoping to become her best friend.

mark thomas: cuckooed (the traverse 1, alternate times)

One of comedy’s elder statesmen and all-round arty mischief-maker returns to the Traverse this Fringe to revisit his theatrical roots with a comedy of betrayal. Mark Thomas tells his true story of how Britain’s biggest arms manufacturer, BAE Systems, came to spy on a comedian in this tale of hubris, planes, demos and undercover deceit. This show is personal, political and, as usual, fucking funny.
Mark’s shows have always been entirely different from each other; he’s stopped arms deals, created a manifesto and brought the winning policy to parliament, walked the entire length of the Israeli wall in the West Bank and most recently completed 100 Acts of Minor Dissent which included an LGBT gig outside the Russian consulate in Edinburgh last August, taking the police to court over surveillance and finding a new definition for the word ‘Farrage’. Mark will perform the completed show at the National Theatre this summer. In 2012, Mark performed his first ever theatre piece at the Traverse, Bravo Figaro, a touching and poignant tale first commissioned by the Royal Opera House about his opera-loving father which sold out its entire run and won Mark a Herald Angel award, a Scotsman Fringe First, and was recently broadcast on Radio 4. This show is set to tour Australia and New Zealand in 2015.
We all know that it’s not just his live shows for which Mark creates the trouble he has become famous for; his channel 4 series The Mark Thomas Comedy Product ran for six series, he’s published three books and a manifesto, had various series commissioned by Radio 4, won a Sony Award for My Life in Serious Organised Crime, been a regular contributor to political magazine The New Statesman, won numerous awards, holds a Guinness World Record, investigated everything from Coca-Cola to inheritance tax avoidance in various TV documentaries, given evidence to Parliamentary Select Committees and stopped multinational infrastructure deals. Oh, and of course he’s been arrested countless times in one day. Fortunately, he has just enough bastard in him to prevent him from becoming a national treasure.

racing minds: aaaaand now for something completely improvised (upstairs - pleasance courtyard, 11:45am)

Be prepared to be blown away this Fringe in an awe-inspiring improvisational explosion as critically acclaimed, total Fringe sell-out (2011-2013) long-form improv quartet Racing Minds return to the Pleasance Courtyard this August.
Formed in 2010 by members of the Oxford Imps, Daniel Roberts, Tom Skelton, Chris Turner and Dougie Walker rely completely on the audience to help create their hour of hilarity - and deliver every time. With only four suggestions at the beginning of the show (main character’s name, their hidden secret, the starting location and title of the story), each show will be totally unguided, entirely unpredictable and undoubtedly one of the finest and most unique Fringe performances you will catch this year. No script, no plot, and no two shows will ever be the same!
Previously unrepresented at the Fringe, Racing Minds immediately won their fan-base at the Free Fringe in 2011 and packed out their venue every single day. A return in 2012 promised the same, and the Pleasance soon snapped them up the following year where they went on to sell out their entire run in 2013. Their completely improvised fifties-style comic radio play podcast The Wireless Podcast also proved a great success with over half a million followers on SoundCloud, promising the comedy industry stars in the making.

sammy j: songbook - for one night only!! (udderbelly, fri 1st aug, 10:50pm)

Fringe favourite Sammy J thought it would be humorous to fly from Melbourne to Edinburgh, perform just one show, then fly home again. This is that show.
Known and loved for his catchy, filthy, nerdy musical comedy stylings, Sammy J has stuffed his hand luggage full of his favourite songs and plans to rock out for precisely 58 minutes before returning to the airport. If nobody laughs, it’s going to be a long flight home.
Usually paired with the foulest-mouthed puppet the world has seen, Sammy J is fast becoming a Fringe legend and in Australia his songs can frequently be heard on TV and radio. He has been involved in several productions at the Fringe over the years including his own solo shows as well as the hit theatrical production Breaker Morant’ alongside fellow Aussies Adam Hills and Brendan Burns. His writing regularly appears in Australian publications and Sammy’s latest album Skinny Man, Modern World is available now through iTunes.

tim fitzhigham: hellfire (pleasance dome, 6:40pm)

This August, the much-loved Spirit of the Fringe, multi-award winning, Perrier nominated comedian and adventurer puts his gambling days behind him (for now, anyway) to lift the lid on the most secret society in the world - the Hellfire Club – in his 12th solo Fringe show (17th Edinburgh in total).
In 1719 a very secret, ancient society (that may have been the real reason Caesar conquered Britain) went public. Perhaps by accident, madness, love or monumental drunkenness Phillip, Duke of Wharton, took the club public. Within two years it had been outlawed by the state. It went back underground - literally into a cave - and passed into legend but perhaps not retirement. The men and women that made up this club, it's practices and the fact that it may still run the world right now is an intrigue that still fascinates (Dan Brown in The Da Vinci Code for example). But how did expeditionary comedian Tim FitzHigham get involved? This is the show that all his shows seem to have been leading to...
Tim will also be appearing in Flanders and Swann, This is your Trial and Fool Circle at this year’s Fringe.

lazy susan: extreme humans (that - Pleasance courtyard, 7pm)

Introducing what will undoubtedly be one of the hottest new acts at this year’s Fringe, sketch duo Lazy Susan are two of the most funny, talented women to emerge in years. They will be performing their first ever hour of fun, character-driven sketch comedy - with smatterings of the dark and surreal but with plenty of heart - at the Pleasance Courtyard this August.
Humans on the edge. Humans on the run. Humans in double-denim. Lazy Susan unleash a gang of characters clawing their way back from the brink. Watch as they pour reality into a snow-globe and chuck it down the stairs in this daft debut hour from the anarchic (but friendly) sketch duo.
Lazy Susan are writer-performers Celeste Dring and Freya Parker. As Lebensmüde, they dipped their toes into the Free Fringe in 2013, where they shared the stage with with Ed Kiely and performed their first 35 minutes of material to warm critical appreciation, as well as appearing in Max & Ivan's Edinburgh Comedy award nominated show. They devise their shows and are directed by Royal Shakespeare Company alumnus Christine Entwisle.
